Take A Bow is an amateur dramatic group for adults with learning disabilities that work to create and deliver semi-professional theatrical shows in Wolverhampton.

Take A Bow drama group delivers weekly sessions working with adults who have a range of learning disabilities including Down’s syndrome and autism. It aims to tackle misconceptions around learning disabilities and those who have them, as well as provide an artistic outlet for those involved to build their confidence and social skills.

Since its inception in 2015, the group has grown from five members to 18. They meet for two hours each week to learn drama, socialise and develop key skills essential to their independence and well-being.

As a result, Take A Bow delivers two semi-professional amateur dramatic productions a year, to sell-out audiences. All the group’s plays are original, self-devised works based on popular culture but with distinctly Black Country themes and references, including their most recent production ‘Murder on the Black Country Express’.

For December 2019, Take A Bow will devise, rehearse and perform a brand new production called ‘Dick Whittington Saves Christmas Stars in Their Eyes’ which will be performed at Newhampton Arts Centre.

The award from Creative Black Country means that for the first time, the group will work with live musicians, incorporate singing into their repertoire, and work with professional costumes and set – enhancing their practice and taking their work to the next level. The production will give participants skills and experience in script-writing, character development, singing and folk tales - working both individually and as part of a team to achieve clear goals.

“Drama has helped me understand how to work in a team. We’re all like brothers and sisters now. Like a family really,” Andy.

“I’ve had a lot to deal with this year and drama just makes me feel better about myself. We laugh a lot,” Alex.
