Culture Volunteers - Hands-On Action at Moseley Old Hall.

Our second group of volunteers working at Moseley Old Hall in Featherstone, Wolverhampton, have had a busy time of it, helping out with all the key tasks that need to be done to keep the Autumn garden and grounds in good shape.

The gorgeous golds of an Autumn leaf display, though lovely whilst on the trees, can be a little less delightful once it’s made it’s way to the ground, especially with all the wet weather we’ve been having this year. Armed with garden rakes and under the guidance of Luke the group set to work …

… filling up some hefty sized bags …

… and taking the grass back from gold to green.

There was time too, to begin coppicing in the hazel walk. Here’s what welcomed them and a pair of garden loppers …

... and here’s the result of some sturdy blades and willing hands.

The stems that have been cut, alongside plenty more, will all be put to good use, as Amy, who looks after Moseley’s grounds, explained.

Next weeks big job? Turning a somewhat sparse hurdle fence …

… into something a little more solid, checking out a stretch where improvement work is already underway to see what needs to be done.

And there’s plenty of fence to be working on! Garden gloves at the ready for next week.

The Culture Volunteer WM project was funded by Arts Council England and the DCMS. The project took place in the Black Country, Stoke and Birmingham. Culture Central led the project, with CBC responsible for delivery in the Black Country region

During the Culture Volunteer WM project, we were lucky to be able to work with the team at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre. There hadn’t been any volunteers at the theatre for roughly ten years, so it was big step to take for them to get them back on board. 71 people came to the recruitment days and there’s now a lovely team of 30 volunteers. The following film tells a little of that story …
