Asylum Art Gallery to unveil the final artist’s work in the Chapel Ash island underpass this July

What a brilliant public art project ROUNDABOUT has been in Wolverhampton, and the final part is about to be unveiled!

Here we’re sharing the news of the final event in a brilliant series of public invitations:

After a 12-month project focused on regenerating a forgotten area of Wolverhampton using multiple arts interventions including; light, sound, sculpture, murals, AR, and a community garden, Asylum Art Gallery are ready to unveil the final artist’s work in the Chapel Ash island underpass.

Funded by Arts Council England, Wolverhampton City Council and Art Gallery, and the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity fund, the ROUNDABOUT project is developing and installing multiple art interventions in the Chapel Ash Island underpass of Wolverhampton with the aim to provide a publicly accessible and free events space for the community to use and bring art into the public realm.

Project Manager Hannah Taylor says:

“Its been truly inspirational to see how our community board and its representatives have worked with the visual artists to respond to the social, political and economic context of the space and co-design not just beautiful outcomes that the public can enjoy, but work that celebrates, acknowledges and is representative of the diverse demographic and rich history of Wolverhampton and its residents. It's been amazing to see the space evolve over the past 12 months and invite creatives to sing, dance and read in response to the work, supported by their communities. From steel sculptures to spoken-word performances, the whole space has evolved to represent something new. This project is about reminding the public that this is public space, its for them to gather and enjoy. We hope it continues to evolve, foster new creativity and inspire other groups to take ownership and plan positive engagement for the whole city and its visitors.”

Most recently, four steel sculptures by Luke Perry have been installed in the underpass accompanied by the planting of a herb and vegetable/fruit garden. Also, a collective of over 20 local graffiti artists filled the underpass with completely new work, coordinating under the new branding but each showcasing their unique talent and style.

After nearly 12 months, three artist residencies, two micro-commissions and two amazing events in the space, Asylum Art Gallery are ready to celebrate the end of the ROUNDABOUT project by collaborating with Wolverhampton Art Gallery for a final celebration with a twist.

On 19 July, 6-9pm, Asylum Art Gallery will be part of the Friday Lates event co-curated with Wolverhampton Art Gallery and More Art In© Gallery.

There, they will mark the end of the 12-month ROUNDABOUT project by welcoming back some of the most iconic performers from across the project, showcasing a new exhibition dedicated to ROUNDABOUT, unveiling the work of the final residency artist, Hayley Wall, and much more.

The Friday Lates lineup looks like this:

  • Lantern Workshop by Gatis Community Space 6-8pm

  • Artist Panel Discussion, Georgian Room 8pm

  • Lantern Parade to the Chapel Ash underpass 9pm

  • Poetry and spoken word performances from Bones and Anisha Sahota plus Fallon, Jay, Cacey and Wozza from Suit Services.
