More to Explore - Walls of Light: Transforming Black Country Streets with Vibrant Murals
The Walls of Light project is bringing vibrant colours and powerful messages to Bearwood neighbourhoods, reminding residents that they are part of something bigger. Spearheaded by old friends Jodi Ann Bickley, author and letter writer, and the critically acclaimed artist Fokawolf, this initiative brings together art, community and hope in an unforgettable way.
The project was born out of a simple reconnection. Jodi and Fokawolf, who rekindled their friendship during the school run, wanted to create something fun and meaningful for the place where their children are growing up. They envisioned bold, joyful murals that not only brighten up everyday surroundings but also inspire a sense of belonging and hope—especially on those tougher days.
“After so many coffees and conversations, we knew we wanted to do something big and positive for our community,” shares Jodi Ann Bickley. “It was about creating art that speaks directly to the people who live here, offering a reminder that they are not alone, and that there is beauty and strength in the places they call home.”
With the support of Creative Black Country’s More to Explore strand, alongside a grant from Arts Council England, Walls of Light invited some of the region’s favourite artists to participate. Together, they’ve transformed ordinary walls into dynamic canvases of colour and creativity. Each mural is designed with the local community in mind, reflecting its heritage, its people, and its spirit.
“The murals have become beacons of light and positivity in these areas,” adds Fokawolf. “It’s amazing to see how a simple wall can become a source of pride and conversation.”
18 Walls of Light murals have brightened key areas across Bearwood with residents and visitors encouraged to explore the murals and share their photos on social media using the hashtag #WallsOfLight.
